Citizen Action and Support Group (CASG) at PAC organized a 2 day training workshop for beneficiaries of Public Distribution System (PDS) in Belgavi. The workshop was intended to train citizen volunteers about their rights and entitlements under PDS.
The selected citizens for the project were educated on the duties and responsibilities as citizen volunteers to monitor Fair Price Shops (FPS) and ensure quality of service delivery. On the first day, session was commenced by the Deputy Director of Belgavi district and followed by the Food Inspector who elucidated the functioning of the ration distribution system and other relevant information to the beneficiaries. To address the queries on consumer grievance and redress mechanism, advocate Mr. Adigi integrated the redress mechanism concept to the public distribution system and had an interactive session to educate the citizens on the various laws relating to the same.
Classroom training was accompanied with a visit to the fair price shop on the second day to demonstrate the participants about the monitoring process to be undertaken in the future. The last few sessions emphasized duties of the participants as citizen volunteers and reporting mechanism to improve the functioning of the fair price shops. The district level partnering NGOs were briefed on their role in providing active assistance to the citizen volunteer teams in their respective taluks.
